Atmospheric CO2

The continuing rise of atmospheric CO2 is at the heart of global warming. This trend is mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels for heat and energy. Othere greenhouse gases exist, and CO2 is the biggest problem because it is responsible for more than three-quarters of the global warming warming. To solve global warming, the key will be the reversal of atmospheric CO2 levels back to 350 parts per million (ppm).

The latest measurement of atmospheric CO2

 Monthly CO2 Reports

High precision measurements of CO2 are taken continuously and directly from the atmosphere at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. A monthly average is reported after the end of each month by a leading scientific institution in the United States. For better or for worse, monthly CO2 reports provide the most current, direct and complete indicator for our collective progress on solving the planetary problems of global warming and climate change. The data speaks for itself and we need to pay attention.

The Most Important Number

For most of the world, the latest measurement of atmospheric CO2 was effectively buried deep among thousands of web pages at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It was available to those who know what they are looking for, buried among many hundreds of FTP pages, each one with long lists of data.

Atmospheric CO2 was liberated in December 2007, when the starter website, themostimportantnumber.org, made atmospheric CO2 the main feature of its home page. Eight months later, the original site needed some major changes. At that point, the site was replaced by CO2Now.org.

CO2 Now

In September 2008, Earth's home page for atmospheric CO2 (along with a few related web pages) moved from themostimportantnumber.org to CO2Now.org. The new site provides the same timely updates for atmospheric levels of CO2. It also has more and better information about CO2 and other greenhouse gases. In addition, it offers people and groups a wide selection of widgets and other tools to make the current CO2 level and trend visible far beyond this single website.

Why CO2Now.org?

When we're not focussed on atmospheric CO2, we are avoiding the the heart of the problem and missing the key to the solution. Here's how CO2Now.org is making it fast and easy for people to stay tuned into the changing CO2 levels and what the changes mean:

Visit the site and you can't miss Earth's CO2 home page with its exclusive focus on the current level of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere.

Know what the numbers mean. It only takes a few good charts to understand. CO2Now.org contains understandable information about greenhouse gases, global warming and climate change that has been assembled from some of the most credible, scientific sources in the world. This includes republished answers to Frequently Asked Questions that are found in reports by the Nobel-winning International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

CO2Now.org distributes Atmosphere Monthly for free email delivery of CO2 updates to any continent and community in the world. Sign up for Atmosphere Monthly and you will be among the first on the planet to know the latest cocentration of atmospheric CO2 and what it means.

Your site can become a hub for people to find and see the current level of atmospheric CO2. Simply add a CO2 widget to your website or blog. CO2Now.org hosts the first and only widget in cyberspace to display the current level of atmospheric CO2. The widget displays objective, scientific data that is appropriate for any type of site.

Adding a widget is easy, takes no maintenance, and the bandwidth costs are covered by CO2Now.org. An installed widget keeps the latest CO2 information on display at your site with automatic updates performed from CO2Now.org without any thought or effort on your behalf. (The current CO2 information displayed on this page is provided with widgets designed and hosted at CO2Now.org.)

For those who want to take a good look at the CO2 numbers, CO2Now.org republishes the scientific data for CO2 in a form that is easy to access and assess. Like no other source on Earth, the data is presented at CO2Now.org in a table that can easily be copied and converted to any spreadsheet.

How much CO2 is safe?

This is an important question. From a scientific perspective, the answer was not known until a report was published in April 2008 by ten scientists led by James Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. This report concludes that the upper ceiling for safe CO2 is 350 parts per million (ppm). It also tells the world that 350 ppm is the target we should be aiming for. The last time CO2 was so low, it was 1988. To solve global warming, we need to aim to reduce atmospheric CO2 to 350 ppm as soon as absolutely practical. It's something so important, we've started Earth's first website that is all about safe CO2.

Let's Solve Global Warming

CO2Now.org is part of the global warming solution, and it is a website worth visiting. This is the site that presents current, objective information about the amount of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere. It makes it easy for anyone to see the actual score on global warming...almost in real time. As more and more people pay attention to CO2 levels, expectations will grow for emissions reductions that are low enough to return the planet to safe CO2 levels and actually solve global warming and climate change.

Check out CO2Now.org. Together we can help send CO2 in a different direction.
